First Lines Fridays #4

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

“People often shit themselves when they die.”

I’m currently buddy reading this with a group of lovely gals from Goodreads

It’s no wonder that this book’s been getting a lot of buzz on Goodreads recently, I mean… did you or did you not just read a killer first line? I may only be on chapter 5 and have no idea where this is heading as I generally don’t like to read the synopsis of books right before I dive in. No harm, no foul because I’m genuinely interested in its writing style, characters and world building. Let’s be real though, this book was a total cover buy for me and and and the beautiful maps in the first few pages already got me hooked 🙂

 GOODREADS SYNOPSIS

Destined to destroy empires Mia Covere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death.

Six years later, the child raised in the shadows takes her first steps towards keeping the promise she made on the day that she lost everything.

But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, so if she is to have her revenge, Mia must become a weapon without equal. She must prove herself against the deadliest of friends and enemies, and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and demons at the heart of a murder cult.

The Red Church is no Hogwarts, but Mia is no ordinary student. The shadows loves her. And they drink her fear.
